I have noticed that quite a few of you lost your childhood dolls due to parents well intentioned acts of 'giving away' your precious toys. Also it seems one or two have managed to keep hold of their treasured childhood dolls. What's your experience? Please share with the group :)

I want a girl also. :D My mom was a Barbie fan, but she couldn't get any as you know...Romania...comunism etc. She only managed to see Barbies in the ads from the Pif & Hercule magazine she sometimes managed to get. So when I was little she asked a friend that crossed ilegally the border to get her one from me. This was a year before the comunist regim fell. He got me one and so my Barbie passion was born. It was a Sun Gold Malibu Barbie and I still have her! I got her restored this year and I love her a lot. You can see pictures of her in my album.
Hi
I still have my childhood dolls and cut their hair and pierced their ears too!
I have repaid their kindness though and restored the ones I'd "modified"!

Melx
You are so right. It is a shame just to see dolls as investment. They ARE people ;)
I had a ton of Barbie's most were hand me downs from my sister. I came home one day from school to find out that my Mother had did some spring cleaning, yes she had donated all my Barbies! She thought I was out of that "phase" because I had got to the point where I didn't play with them because I was scared I would mess them up. I just had them all sitting in my Barbie dream house on display. I was so upset that I didn't talk to my mother for almost a month, till this day I still haven't let her forget about it. On Birthdays and Christmas when she asks me what I want, I tell her a Barbie. Yeah, she refuses to buy me dolls since I'm 30 so she gets me an ebay giftcard and then I use it to buy Barbies.
oush!! sure, your Mom understood that you were no so ready to get rid of you dolls hee hee.
Have you found back (E-bay) some of your favorites, or have you bought other Barbies?
yes indeed you were lucky, seeing here the stories, not everyone got that chance :-(
Lilly is this question for me, if so I have purchased a few of them. Dream glow Barbie, a few of the happy family members, Hollywood hair barbie and teresa. When I started looking for replacement dolls I learned very quickly that dolls that I played with when I was a child are now considered "vintage". This makes me feel very old and broke now that they are 2 to 3 times more expensive, lol!
sorry Gwen I should have write your name (yes the question was for you ) but I am so comfortable here now, that I assumed you were seated in front of me hee hee
I am always amazed by some prices of the "vintage"Barbie"
As we are getting older, our taste changes, I suppose, and we are tempted by other dolls, so it is nice if you find something, and who knows maybe one day you will got one of your childhood friend!
I'm loving your stories guys! Although it breaks my heart to hear about the dolls and toys which were given away and lost over the years. It must be how eBay made their millions with all of us getting back out childhood!

Keep them coming everyone!
Oh Gwen, this breaks my heart! I know parents do these things with good intentions but it is so sad :(
I believe you are correct, ebay made a ton from me just this past weekend alone. LOL! I did just purchase this past weekend one of the many dolls that I had as a child (one of my sisters hand me downs), Growing hair Francie. I can't wait!
Oh! I have my only one Barbie, the argentinian Rock Star, and the other 3 dolls of my sisters... I also have our MLP, but just because I`m very in love with my childhood things. We at home, didn`t keep the other toys, may be because it weren`t so nice or in great condition. We used to have many baby dolls but we didn`t play much with them.
I used to have a Tammy doll too, but I can`t remember what happened to her :S
