Naming Your Doll!

 

            Greetings, Everyone!

 

                I thought this might be an interesting topic for discussion, so here it goes:

 

                                      Most times we name our dolls. Either for personal reasons or a name we just have stuck in our heads, it leaves a unique reminder of something in our pasts that we hold dear to us. It's always interesting, looking back and remembering the story behind the name. Do you name your dolls? If so , what do you name them after? Where do you get your inspiration?? (e.g. a movie, a look-alike, where you bought it, etc.) Or do you keep their "factory" name? (That gets pretty tricky when you have 10 different models of the same doll!!) Do you need advice naming your doll???? Maybe we can help out!

 

                                      I guess I'll start!

 

                                                   I never really began naming my dolls until I recieved my second Ellowyne. I named her Louisa, since I was in "The Sound Of Music" at the time. Whenever I mention her or make a reference to her, all the happy memories of being in the production come back to me! It's a "moment in time" sort of deal.  With my latest doll, the FDQ exclusive Grey, I am still brainstorming. She really reminds me of an English queen, with her pale skin and strong features. I recently watched "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" and she sort of reminds me of Queen Elizabeth! A very pale and beautiful creature, yet very strong emotionally despite her delicate figure. That's the idea I'm going with, so bear with me.

May I recommend purchasing a baby name book or surfing a "Names and their meanings" website? I was having a devil of a time finding a name for Viktor and Andrea's baby, so I searched a baby names website for popular Celtic girl's names (Andrea has Scotch-Irish heritage) and there it was, in the "F's" - Fiona! It hit me like a bolt of lightening when I saw it, and I simply could not figure out how I hadn't thought of it before. I highly recommend it if you're having trouble.

(Can you tell she's my favorite?)  I'm still getting to know them so their most suitable names haven't come to me yet, but blonde Luchia Z. is keeping her maiden name even if her brunette twin moves in later on. I've renamed one of the Barbies "Angel" because... well, you'll see. :-)

Each time I got a new member, as the ethnicity is different for each of them,  I love to give them a proper name that suit they personality, but as those names are from very foreign to totally unknown to me, I google:  girl /boy name + country, and I am always amazed by the diversity!!

And now it's story time...   (Future Bound) Luchia is a Swedish girl who leaves men forlorn & wishing they could be with her, the most devoted of whom is (Dynamite Girls) Kyo.  Contrary to what you might think from her appearance, she's got a good heart and doesn't string them along on purpose. She just wants someone real. ;> After a long pursuit, she finally starts to appreciate Kyo's many admirable qualities and decides that he's the one for her. They're now an inseparable pair, despite the attempts of Kyori & Luchia's evil twin to pry him loose.

Now since I found Lucia in a list of Swedish names & like the idea of naming Kyo after the lead singer of J-rock band Dir en Grey, maybe they'll both stay the same. But her evil twin is getting a name the opposite of Lucia (light) & Kyori is being changed to reflect her heartbreaker status.

i love this topic! what's in a name as the saying goes?...i love historical fiction, and non-fiction so most of my names for my dolls are taken out of favorite books, legends, (and even tho i'm not religious) the bible...my favorite barbie (my dreadlock kayla) is named morgan.  for the historical morgan le fay from the king arthur legends.  morgan has two sisters, eve (biblical) and lilith (also biblical, but more legend if you believe in the "throw away" creation story that put lilith before eve in the garden of eden.)  i also have an ann (after ann boleyn, one of my favorite historical figures.)
