Things not to say to a doll lover?

We have all experienced the odd raised eyebrow or nervous shuffling of feet when we tell a friend or acquaintance about our doll hobby. After all they know not what they do, poor things :(

 

However the best we can expect is for our nearest and dearest to at least be polite! Unfortunately this is not always the case so this begs the question: what it the worst thing that someone has said to you in the face of your love of dolls??

 

To kick things off this is what a friend said to me when I excitedly showed off my latest (and rather expensive) gal; "You paid that much... for a piece of plastic!" Ugh the words still haunt me!

To be honest I think she kinda had the negative comment coming...

Plus I think one can only change their feedback upon the seller's request.

Hi guys things seem to have wondered off the topic of this thread. However I think it would be worth someone starting a thread dedicated to sharing member's experience of evilb... sorry eBay. it is such a huge part of being a doll collector after all and we all have dealings with it both good and bad.

This was back before they reformed the feed back process many years ago. We both wanted to remove the feedback and they would not let us. We had come to an agreement, the dolls were only late, but if she had contacted me, it never would have gotten to that point.

Ebay has all kind of problems not just with dolls with everything, I used to buy these glass bowls I collect and each time all the bowls would arrive broken because the seller used cheap packing. The Darci with the black toe, I posted about was stained by newspaper print used in the packing when they should have use popcorn. So, I never buy glass bowls or clothes on ebay or watches, or just about anything else, but dolls.

          Good topic choice!

                    Since I'm in the younger half of the members, I really haven't had any experiences like this(yet). I usually don't start a conversation with an acquaintance concerning my doll doll collection. I'm surprised how many people know about my hobby and are still cool about it. My brother doesn't care as long as it doesn't involve him, and my father thinks we get some bonding time when he helps me take some professional shots of them. He always tells me, "They are so perfect (the female dolls); they are beautiful, and they don't talk!" Although some people who are invited to my home wander into my bedroom and then, well..the cat's out of the bag! I usually declare my bedroom off limits when my brother's friends are over. Although 15 year old boys are known for not playing by the rules. Usually everyone gawks at how much the dolls are -- "You paid $200 dollars for a doll?" I sigh inside my mind, as I realize explaining how the Kissing Ashley Goodbye ensemble is made of high quality fabric and accurate to the film is not worth a try. Not to even mention to Tonner's accuracy on the Vivian Leigh head sculpt. There's a little phrase that I'd like to share with you all:

 

                  "Everyone will respect you for the way you are because the people who matter don't mind, and the people who mind don't matter." 

 

                It may take a while to understand, but you'll get there!  And NEVER have I experienced this to not be true!!

That's a nice phrase, too bad my own parents don't understand my hobby and I love them to bits :P. I mean, my dad got mad at me every time I bought a doll when I was a teen! Then already he thought it was a waste of money. And I bought dolls that were like €2!

                    Yes, I completely understand. I guess it's sort of a hit or miss relationship with parents; they either accept your unusual hobbies or they don't. Unfortunately, doll collecting is fairly new to the hobby world, so I think it needs some time to grow on those who think dolls are only for little girls. Do you make clothes for your dolls???? I do think that when people see the clothes I make for the dolls, they understand why I collect them. Not really just to put on a shelf, but to actually make garments for them. Since I don't really have an interest in spending money on a life-sized mannequin, I express my love for design through dolls. I guess collecting dolls is like any other hobby, it's of value to the person who does the collecting; it's worthless to the bystanders. They don't realize that it makes us happy to open a huge box to reveal an extremely limited doll!!!

Well I think you're right about that. I do make new clothes for my dolls indeed, although they're crappy and I'm still learning, but I also reroot the dolls from my childhood, and I do think my family seems to accept my hobby a bit more since they've seen what I do to the dolls. I have two younger sisters who think it's a weird, obsessive hobby, just like my father, but when they saw the rerooted/redressed dolls I'd fixed up, they did seem to like them.

 

You know what's funny... my mother used to think it was a weird obsession as well. But my boyfriend's father LOVES my hobby haha (he's a total sweetheart), and since he enthusiastically sponsored me by giving me €30 out of the blue to buy three boxed dolls from Portugal, my mom seems to want to compete with him by also investing in my hobby in her own little way. It's weird :P.
