Things not to say to a doll lover?
We have all experienced the odd raised eyebrow or nervous shuffling of feet when we tell a friend or acquaintance about our doll hobby. After all they know not what they do, poor things :(
However the best we can expect is for our nearest and dearest to at least be polite! Unfortunately this is not always the case so this begs the question: what it the worst thing that someone has said to you in the face of your love of dolls??
To kick things off this is what a friend said to me when I excitedly showed off my latest (and rather expensive) gal; "You paid that much... for a piece of plastic!" Ugh the words still haunt me!

as I am not a collector but more a passionate player with my 30+- dolls, except for my kids (we played together a looooot )and of course my grand-kids (I am teaching them how to play hee hee) as well as my hubby who is very encouraging , the rest of relative and (no doll connected) friends are not so understanding
when I was making/sale OoaK Barbie doll, the "stun eyes" about the price happened ,of course people who were raising questions weren't buying anyway , that was just for telling their opinion (as if I cared)
most of the time, the: how old are you?? came quite often (for your information I am 57 and this is just the beginning hee hee I do intent to play a long long long time.
I (now) never say the price of one of my doll, as I do not argue with the price of any art piece.
if one day I cannot do anything with my hands/eyes, maybe, I will ask the price for a very good very counfortable armchair, but until then if I can afford it, I will buy it, and as I usually say, I do not drink,I do not smoke I play dolls

My Gaymer Ex once said that I invested too much time and money into "pieces of plastic", to which I retorted: "How is it any different than the money and time you pour into video games and staring at the television?!" ---To Each, Their Own, IDIOT! ;)

I just have to add this from reading it so often on eBay, "the marks will come off the doll with proper cleaning". (Translation: I tired to clean the marks off so I could get a better price, but they won't come off, so maybe you can get them off if you have magical powers.)

My father didn't understand my love for Pamela Love dolls when I was a teenager and he gets it even less now that I'm 27 and suddenly started collecting them again :P. Even though I now collect boxed dolls or reroot old dolls, instead of playing with them, most people in my family think it's a childish hobby. They think it's an unhealthy obsession. Whenever my boyfriend tries to keep me from buying another doll, at least I have a weapon: his love for Magic playing cards :P. Hehe!
On a more positive note: yesterday I won three Portugese auctions for MIB Pamela Love dolls (I'm so happy!!) and when my father-in-law heard, he offered to pay for them for me!! He thinks it's a cool hobby :) :).

I once told a work associate about my doll collection and she went onto say, "Oh, so you spend all your money on dolls, then." I took offense to that... It's like those who don't collect anything don't understand that to collect doesn't mean you neglect saving money... Yes, it includes splurging a bit, but I don't spend ALL my money on dolls.
Other than that, my friends have bene pretty good about not putting down my hobby with two face remarks.

People should know it depends on what type of dolls one collects. Some dolls are cheaper to collect. Some people spend a lot of money on shoes and handbags.

Yes indeed! Who are we to criticise how anyone else spends their money? As long as these things give us pleasure and we can afford them then why not! And as you say it doesn't have to cost so much. A bottle of wine can cost more than a bargain doll and that is gone in an evening lol :)

Most people are shocked when they see my house....actually, I don't even collect very much now, as I am mainly a dealer and manufacturer. ( and believe me, making dolls in quantity REALLY begins to put you off collecting..having 30+ Lilli repros in various stages of production staring at you 24 hours a day takes the gilt off the gingerbread!) Let alone dealing with ebay maniacs who think if they paid yesterday, they should have their doll today
Now, I am more interested in history of dolls, and more unusual types - my friend bought me a 24" composition Furga for my birthday - and I LOVE her, even though she is so huge, she is so beautiful. I also like antique dolls - but they do have to be self financing - so if I buy something, I have to sell something to pay for it.

Dear Rose Red, lol know what you mean about ebay! I often get emails a few days after I shipped and they are wondering where the doll is! (even though I have emailed them that their item has shipped and told them the estimated time of delivery....and I have usually waited a week for payment) ????? I am trying to do what you said, as I have a room full of dolls...sell something to pay for it....it is easy to get carried away with all the beautiful dolls out there....but one still has to pay bills! I don't always stick to those guidlines (yes, I have a bit of a doll problem) but it is getting easier as time goes by as I can let go of some of the dolls that I am not as in love with as I once was...Manufacturing must be interesting though??? I would be interested in hearing about that.....

There once was a pair of shoes that never came, so I waited until the so called time was up. The time is three weeks, so after that I emailed and the seller had never shipped them at all. She said the email that shoes sold went into spam, and so I was never getting the shoes. If one waits too long, then it can not be tracked very well. Some seller are really lazy about going to post office, they wait as long as they can because they are busy, then they forget to do it at all. If I sell something I always ship it as soon as possible, so that person is not left wondering what is going on. I once had some dolls coming, they were really late, the seller said she had shipped them, but she had not. She just wanted to stop bothering me by claiming she shipped them. So, eventually she did ship them 3 weeks later, and I thought they were lost in the mail. She was ignoring my emails, so I left her her negative then all of sudden she is available and claiming she was on vacation, so I asked her why she did not turn on her vacation reply. If I pay you right away as soon as I can, you should ship as soon as you can, because it is the polite thing to do. So, then they came it was like five weeks, but I could not take back the negative feedback. I tired to take it back because the dolls came. But, this kind of thing should never happen. It creates animosity between buyer and seller. Sometimes I think the seller is mad it sold too low, so they punish the buyer by delaying as long as they can in shipping. I am not saying I think it will come right away, but with in a week is a reasonable amount of time to ship. If it is longer, that is just bad service. There was one lot of dolls I was getting for parts, and the seller emailed and said it would be late. So I said "no problem", at least she told me what was going on, so I was not thinking it was lost in the mail.

Shipping is so high. You are so right. I returned a 20 dollar watch, that did not work, but the shipping was 10 dollars, and I could not get a lower rate. That is why I hate to return things because the buyer pays for the shipping both ways. It was not fair when I bought a shirt size 12, and when it came it was size 6. So the seller said I could return it, but the price of the shirt was 99 cents, and I would lose more on shipping it back, then I would gain on the return. That is why the seller should refund the money without a return when there is a gross mistake like that. I could not wear that tiny shirt, so I gave it to goodwill.
It sound like you are doing a good job. I know I freak out if I think the doll is lost and I really wanted that doll and often it is one of a kind. Sure you can get another like it, but not exactly like that particular one.
