I went on a hunting expedition to a large out of town Toys R Us the other day and was very disappointed in the play line Barbie. Apart from the fashionistas (which i am not keen on in MHO), the dolls and playsets were poorly thought out, cheap looking and far too PINK! A far cry from her heyday and the Barbie Collector dolls that us adults get to enjoy.

What are your thought on the state of modern play-line Barbie?

I offered My granddaughter a fashionista for her 7 birthday, and she was very happy to discover the articulated body, but I think that it is not a good toy before this age, and even if she is a true princesses lover , she likes some time to "get out" off the glittering and pink to a more realistic kind of outfit she does love the barbie basic!

Yes I agree with you, for me the new playlines are too pink, but I think we shouldn't judge them by comparing them to our childhood toys. Every generation has it's tastes, it's loves. We loved Saved by The Bel.. Kids now love Hannah Montana. We loved Wonder Woman toys, they love Ben 10 etc etc etc.

This is what KIDS what nowadays. Those dolls are not for us to love or buy. We are not the desired target buyers. :)

I think the newest Basics pretty much fit the bill.  They are articulated, more fashionable than pink and glittery, and have a price point of about $20.  I preordered 2 and received them several weeks ago.  Haven't de-boxed yet, but looking forward to "playing" with them.

Oh they sound great, I haven't seen them though.  Are there any pics of them on the net anywhere?

Thanks Denyse. They look really great! Shame Mattel won't ship to the UK though. I hope they will be available here soon.

Di :)

I ordered one of the new Basics as well, but won't open her until Christmas.  I hope Mattel will continue to expand the Basics articulated ladies into their full face mold and skin tone range that the original Basics had.  It would be wonderful to have a full range of skintones (and the fellas too!!!)

I agree!  :)
Sadly, I read that there is but one moe wave before the basics will be discontinued.
Denyse, that is really sad to hear.  Maybe they will start releasing the Fashionista in more skin-tones! That'd be really nice.
That would be REALLY nice!  I actually bought 2 Liv Queen of Hearts dolls just to have dark skinned articulated body donors for my Barbies.  I would love to see a dark Fashionista - without a cheese eating grin!
I plan on picking up a Liv gal, as well as a Monster High gal too, as I want to be able to expand my 1/6th clothes and accessory business to include them and I think items sell better when you can see them with the figure you are wanting to buy them for!  (hmm I might have to pick up a guy from each set as well since I have some Ken clothes patterns and it would be a good thing to be able to include the fellas too!)
