Hi All!

Just sharing a Kimono I made for my Sybarite Katana. She is wearing an inner robe inside to protect her from staining. I also customized and accessorized the wig to make it look more like a Geisha.

Pattern is a generic one I found on the internet for Gene which I resized to fit the Sybarite body.

That is amazing!

Gorgeous, Jo!    And I love what you were able to do with the wig.

Psst!  Put her left kimono lapel over her right, though...the only time a kimono is worn right over left is when the wearer is deceased.   Yeah, I'm a kimono-nerd.

That's really beautiful! The fabric you got is gorgeous. Her hair style and fan are just right too.

Thanks Everyone for the compliments!

Deb, I will have to remember that for the next kimono I make as I put the press buttons on the kimono so it doesnt open... but then again the obi is so tied and fiddly I dont dare open it! haahaa

All this kimono talk inspired me to make one today! You ladies are all awesome.

Here's my second attempt (I hated the sleeves on the first attempt). I am going to make a maxi skirt in the contrast material to make up for the shortness. The tutorial I used (from deviant art) wasn't very clear...

DEB!!! I need your enlightenment!!!

are their any rules for the obi's colors??

forbidden colors together?

it seems that I've seen colors that do not match really (kimono /obi) I know that white is sorrow and red is luck  but this is about all my knowledge

Oh, golly, kids...there are SO many kimono "roolz" it's hard to know where to begin.    The lapel thing is really the only item that jumps out at me, and that's because I've gone into so many Japanese restaurants/sushi bars in which the wait staff serving one are all dead.  Zombie waiters and waitresses!!

Back in the Heian era there were incredibly strict guidelines in regard to color, pattern/motif, sleeve length, etc. depending on the season, the wearers age and social class.  Things are more relaxed these days, but the seasons and age still determine what is worn, when and where.

But that's where we (as foolish Gaijin ) get a lot of leeway and artistic license. We can bend the rules, and no elder is going to shake their head and admonish us, because we are unfamiliar with the art of wearing kimono, and the language of kitsuke is not native to us.  Here's a link to a branch of my old "home" that will explain everything you need to know.  http://www.immortalgeisha.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Certain rules do apply (just remember 'left over right', or as one of the top Kitsuke Masters, Yuka, reminds us "Left over rice!" ) but for gosh sake, have fun with it!  Don't worry that you're wearing Momiji (maple) with the wrong color, or *gasp* as a Hitoe (unlined) kimono.  Having fun takes priority.

I have a lovely vintage Okinawan ceremonial garment that I dug out after Val started playing with kimono and Inro, I'll post a picture of somebody wearing it later.  I'm so glad I kept it!

I was just looking at that website!
