Hi All!

Just sharing a Kimono I made for my Sybarite Katana. She is wearing an inner robe inside to protect her from staining. I also customized and accessorized the wig to make it look more like a Geisha.

Pattern is a generic one I found on the internet for Gene which I resized to fit the Sybarite body.

Oh, golly, kids...there are SO many kimono "roolz" it's hard to know where to begin.    The lapel thing is really the only item that jumps out at me, and that's because I've gone into so many Japanese restaurants/sushi bars in which the wait staff serving one are all dead.  Zombie waiters and waitresses!!

Back in the Heian era there were incredibly strict guidelines in regard to color, pattern/motif, sleeve length, etc. depending on the season, the wearers age and social class.  Things are more relaxed these days, but the seasons and age still determine what is worn, when and where.

But that's where we (as foolish Gaijin ) get a lot of leeway and artistic license. We can bend the rules, and no elder is going to shake their head and admonish us, because we are unfamiliar with the art of wearing kimono, and the language of kitsuke is not native to us.  Here's a link to a branch of my old "home" that will explain everything you need to know.  http://www.immortalgeisha.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Certain rules do apply (just remember 'left over right', or as one of the top Kitsuke Masters, Yuka, reminds us "Left over rice!" ) but for gosh sake, have fun with it!  Don't worry that you're wearing Momiji (maple) with the wrong color, or *gasp* as a Hitoe (unlined) kimono.  Having fun takes priority.

I have a lovely vintage Okinawan ceremonial garment that I dug out after Val started playing with kimono and Inro, I'll post a picture of somebody wearing it later.  I'm so glad I kept it!

At Immortal Geisha?!  That was the first 'social networking' site I ever joined.  There are so many lovely people there, some of which became friends for life.

I was looking for hair style examples, and happened along it.

I bought an asian style doll, have been listening to Japanese music, and making Japanese diorama accessories! I've been fully inspired!
Jo, what did you use for the combs?

I used a plastic (disposable picnic type plate with a patterned rim) plate and cut it to of the arch pieces and allowed a little extra to form the teeth. Then i sprayed with acrylic spray and sealed it and then slotted it into the wig. It was pretty easy, but the effect when in the wig is amazing.

That's smart! I am having a hard time finding flowers small enough!

What a stunning kimono!  Would you consider making one on commission for someone who cannot sew?  :)

@ Rebecca Pettigrew there are tutorials on youtube on how to make ribbon roses or go to your local craft store like my lazy self and buy the premade ones LOL

@Nan Beau - I dont think my sewing is good enough to be "commission" work LOL... I know I am my biggest critic but would hate to sew something for someone and disappoint them!. But thank you for the compliment :)

Oh my doll!! I followed carefully Deb advice and placing my kimono left over right...left over right... don't forget left over right so I did...then I took my pictures and (as usual) I play a bit with them, crop them, sharpen them and...horizontal flip them (why??? I have no idea)  but all my pics arrived ...heu right over left

here you have the right pic

and look left over right!!

You just made me very happy, Rebecca.   You are totally in the Nihon "zone".

AWESOME job, Lilly!  She would feel right at home among my collection of Geisha and Oiran ningyo.  The buttercup yellow looks so nice with the plum color.  Contrasting, yet so complimentary.
