'October Theme: Season's Greetings' Photo Contest Entries

For some it may seem far too soon to be thinking about Christmas (unless, like me, it is never too soon to be thinking about the festive season!). However there is a rational behind my thinking! As you know the winning theme contest pic now features on the main page of our community, as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages. So by the time the pic has been voted for and a winner announced it would seem most odd to see a Christmas photo in February! Much better to see it for the month of December!!

So, dear members, do you see where I'm coming from? Good, that's settled then; the theme for October is... Season's Greetings! A theme intended to celebrate all that is good about the season to be jolly, and all in dolly form to boot!

The winning photo voted by members will now win a whopping $50 PRIZE!! Plus the winning pic will spend a month featured on our front page and be the public header for our Twitter & Facebook Fan Page too!

The 'rules' of the theme photo competition are very simple:

  1. Your photo must contain a doll or dolls
  2. The photo must be taken recently, specifically for the challenge
  3. Make sure the photo relates to the spirit of the relevant month's theme
  4. Members should enter one photo only per theme (although you are free to add more but please highlight which particular photo you would like to go forward into the competition).
  5. Give your photo a title, whether it be witty or cutting edge cool!
  6. Post your picture in the Theme Photo thread in the discussion forum below
  7. Make sure to have as much fun as possible!

I'd like to give you a picture of Christmas in Thailand. Mind you, over 90% of Thai people are Buddhist and most of the rest Muslim, so there is only a small minority who really celebrate Christmas, but almost all Thai people celebrate what they call "international New Year" on December 31 in addition to the Thai New Year in April, so they tend to put up decorations in advance of New Year, and you'd be surprised how many people include Christmas trees and Santa Claus images in their decorations!

Well, at my son's primary school the director wanted the children to have an international outlook, so she always organized a Christmas event-- usually on Christmas Day, because it is not a national holiday and everyone goes to work and school as normal. And the director contacted the owners of the local elephant park to bring real live elephants to the school every year. Would you believe they dress some of the younger elephants in Santa suits? They are so cute! 

And they have a little parade of some of the older students dressed in Santa suits to give candy to the kindergarten students. My son got dragged into being a Santa one year and he hated it, because the long sleeved suit was hot and they used some sort of glue to attach a fake cotton beard to his face and he said it really hurt when they pulled it off! He was not too jolly.

My goodness!  Such an international group we have here.  I think it would be fun to have each of you tell us what Christmas/Winter Solstice etc, tradition you have found to be the most different in the various places you've each lived.

Great photo, David. There's a lot happening there. The dogs look so tired out! I wonder who wished for the Charlie's Angels poster for Christmas?
