You are right, but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. There are so many dolls if you start to look for antique, that look like chuckie scary, but are very desirable, some times the more ugly I think the doll is the more expensive it is.

I don't think that is necessarily true - there are several HK Lilli's which are far rarer than a real Bild Lilli - but nowhere near as expensive. Miss Barbie is a pretty rare doll, but not particularly expensive, because she is a plain doll...An item being desirable is what makes it expensive - rarity can be controlled. I know for a fact that #1's were hoarded by the major dealers in the USA. I think to be expensive a doll has to be both rare and desirable and what is currently in vogue. It's very personal - I wouldn't give $2 for a sybarite, but I'll pay a fair amount for a good Miss Suzette, who is proiving a very elusive doll these days!

I did see some lilli clones at low prices, but they were in very bad shape, so I did not get one yet. The more rare something is the more valueable.

Clones are really interesting - who thought that Hong Kong Lilli would ever sell for more than vintage Barbie? They are also very hard to ID - my friend and I started researching 60's Lilli clones with a view to writing a book, but it's impossible - dolls were churned out by dozens of small factories, which have disappeared, so with few exceptions, like Sylvie and Babs - who are more Barbie clones anyway - you can find very little information.
These dolls are much rarer than the dolls they copied - they were cheaply made and break very easily, some are strung with elastic bands, the hair is on a pate and can't rally be touched and were quickly destroyed by children!
Lilli herself is quite good quality and was not originally made as a toy - so many have survived comparatively. Vintage Barbie is of a high quality and MILLIONS were made and treasured.

Packaging on clones is also fascinating - Sylvie's box is mental, an we used it as inspiration for one of our boxes.

The doll is really not that bad from this view point. Maybe I can dress her up? Some how she looks worse directly from the front, the profile is not bad.

I did get a refund for the doll. I took another photo in which one can see the outfit and the doll with the heel, but you have to zoom in on the heel to notice it, in the full view. Does anyone know how to stop the plastic from further decay?

I have to put all my post on the wall or the photos don't show up, this is for my post "the world's ugliest clone". This hideous looking doll looked ok, in a small photo, but it has a cracked heel. I thought I could live with this doll. The hip appears to made for riding a horse, but the brown ridding boots damaged the foot. Always store your dolls with the shoes off. Let this be a lesson to all of us. I am trying to get my money back, the cracked heel was not disclosed.

Your second doll looks a lot like Gloria or Keri Mitchell. Look: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ct19SvJaJq0/SUcXj83_W8I/AAAAAAAAArI/8i3e2...
