A Gay Doll For Kids? The big lies of the press...

It's deaf night in my city now so I'll just quote my own post from the DOLLS website that was dedicated to Andy Mills doll from Robert Tonner Doll Company.

There's a big buzz in Russian news now. And it's not about a gay doll from Robert Tonner. It's about a gay Andy Mills doll from MATTEL!! A toy gay doll for kids was somehow invented by Russian journalists, and now hundreds of men and women are moaning online: "how could they?! WHO are they making our kids play with?!".

It took a lot of time and effort to help a young Russian doll collectors' community grow. Tonner dolls have been imported to Russia for several years already. But time after time we are literally forced to think that it was all in vain, because most people still blindly believe that Dolls Are For Kids. They see any adult doll and they say: "Barbie!" (=> kids => How Could They Make Such A Doll For Kids?!) This is what you see when you stumble upon a bunch of Fashion Royalty, Tonner and Sybarite lingerie-clad gentle figurines in a public photo blog and the title says: "SEE WHAT THEY MANUFACTURE FOR OUR KIDS".

So sad.

To be honest, I'm horrified by this "sensation". It's ok to say that our world provides more ugly things to be horrified with. BUt as a doll collector and a journalist myself, I don't stop asking myself - DO THEY EVER CHECK INFORMATION before they post it in an online newspaper that's able to collect hundreds of Facebook reposts in several days?!

I'm personally ashamed! Internet "belongs" mainly to Russians from Moscow and St.-Petersburg, these cities provide about 75% of WWWeb users. There are NUMEROUS international doll expos annually *I'm tired of them because I have to visit almost all*. Sometimes even expos of Barbies take place (with tons of desinformation in press as well, but nevertheless). THESE PEOPLE HAVE ALL CHANCES to find out that dolls are not for kids only! THE JOURNALISTS MUST find proofs for the things they're going to print out loud! I don't have TV, I'm afraid the Gay Mattel Ken Doll is already there.

Tomorrow I'm going to post about that on my site. 6-7 thousands of daily readers are nothing against hordes of screamers but I will do what I can.

Thanks Simon

I did not know about Andy Mills, until I read this and I do really love the  way Tonner is presenting his new character just a normal active guy who happen to be gay. I bought Emme a couple of years ago because she is "over size" I would love to buy Andy because he is "over taboo"

Tonner used to give personal stories to his characters, the doll itself is only a stylish boy who could have a "straight" legend as well.

I myself have nothing again gays and lesbians, it is the personality of the person that's really important, ot his or her preferences...

I am very naive maybe? but what is a Gay doll? what are the significant difference between straight guys/girl and Gay guy/girl??

I have in my "gang a couple of Gay men the are living together and working together and the love each other very much.

Thank you. I think it's important for the journalists to check information and that's the main thing I wanted besides giving true information about exact dolls. No "witch hunting", and I'm glad that the editor of the first source that published the information wrote to me today, and told me that the info was corrected as well.

More news: Tonner Doll Company answered and they promised to check that (yay!).

The most famous online magazine deleted the article at all.

One more changed the contents giving the facts, not lies.

The owner of the 1st site that published the info contacted me and gave the link to this news in English (of course there was everything correct, the writer seems not to understand English properly) and changed the information.

I think that's great, it's better than nothing :)

Thanks for this Katie. It is such a shame that the press in Russia can be just as hysterical as the ones we have here. I think research for this type of journalism just gets in the way of a good 'story' so they don't even bother :(

Please keep us updated with the developments and if you hear back from Tonner or Mattel

A little bit of news. I've written an article, and I've sent the letters to Mattel and Tonner Doll Company. At least they should know what's happening because both companies are on the Russian market.
