I love to photography dolls. I am getting a new camera because my old cheap cannon died. I keep my dolls stored, and if I want to look at them, I use the photos on my computer instead of having to take them out of the storage boxes. I would like to hear your comments on doll photography. What camera do you use? Lighting? Backgrounds?

Usually I’m taking photos in room because there’s not always good weather when I have vein ;)

I use diffused sunlight for photos, I’m taking photos when light doesn’t come in directly by the window. In my opinion artificial light makes the color deferent. I pose the doll about 1,5 m from background (wall) so on pictures it’s nicely blurred and details of doll and gown on foreground comes out sharp.

I got a Canon Powershot SD400IS, because amazon would not ship out the other camera, and I really wanted to photograph my dolls. This one goes into macro mode automatically when you go close, so you can go close on the hand or a detail like a pursue or the shoes, and then take a shot of the whole doll without changing settings.

I was using a canon A1100IS, but it just stopped working a few days ago, and I have an older back up sony, but it's less then 4mega pixels. I am getting a Pentax X90 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 26x Super-Telephoto Triple Shake Stabilized Zoom from amazon, so I can try it out. The macros are supposted to be good, and that's all I care out, because when I go out of macro mode with the canon, the photos of my doll are out of focus.

I have a A710IS Canon and I like it, the cam's not bad - it's a tad difficult to take pics when it is dark but on the whole it's ok. I like taking pictures outside or use a plain fabric background.
Table lamps are nice but they shouldn't be placed too close to the doll. I don't use the lightning in the camera because it gives very sharp shadows and too bright highlights.
