I’ve had a severe case of writers block these last few weeks and in order to stir the creative juices decided to make a plea via Twitter for some inspirational suggestions. One very helpful Twitter-er, Mothdoll, suggested writing about the dolly things I’d like to see but aren’t yet true. Well that really got me thinking and therefore here are my very own “Top 10 Fashion Doll Wants”!

1. I love an articulated doll. In fact I adore the realistic poses they can achieve as opposed to the “zombie” look of less articulated dolls (Miss B take a bow!). However, and it pains me to admit, I do have a wee bit of an issue with ugly joints. There we go I’ve said it, no matter how I try I just can’t get past UGLY joints! They can mar photos and they make me point blank refuse to put a doll in shorts! So please doll inventor people come up with a way of making articulation look more real, just like those beautiful faces you so wonderfully create.

2. Can someone please stop Robert Tonner jumping on every single franchise bandwagon and start concentrating on designing fashion dolls? You know those very things that made him what he is and made us all adore him for his great talent! I mean ballerina Wizard of Oz dolls? Whatever next!

3. What I’d also love to see is far more accessories for the 16” brigade. By that I mean things like furniture, diorama items, backdrops and anything that can make their environments that bit more realistic. As a child I always loved playsets and I’d love to see “official” environments for my dolls to be displayed and photographed in.

4. Less harmful packaging please! Why should it take an hour to debox a doll and drag half a headful of hair out of their head in the process!

5. Please no more dead baby dolls creeping into fashion doll shows/sales rooms. It’s like oil and water and just ain’t right I’m afraid!

6. I’d love to see more realistic short hairstyles because how many women do you know that have hair down to their beltline?

7. Sort out the prices. I mean I may be an adult collector but does that mean I have to pay prices that would make a millionaire wince? I love my dolls but I do have to eat! Although that said I can go without if Superfock have a particularly wonderful trifle on offer…

8. As a UK resident I would love to see some actual real life doll shops rather than just relying on the Internet and evilbay.

9. And as a UK resident why of why are US shipping rates so darned expensive!

10. Finally please can it be law that celebrity likenesses be actual likenesses rather than bizarre recycled moulds!

So there is my top 10. Does anyone agree or disagree or have any other suggestions? Please comment and let me know.

That's an interesting point. I guess these kinds of dolls are far more 'traditional' in many places also.

Yes I prefer Sybs of course too! I don't really like the face ups of the AG dolls. However I really don't like the Syb hip joints so much.

We should see the new Syb body in a couple of months as long as Superfrock haven't been leading us on lol! I am intrigued as to what they have come up with.

Yeah, I've seen an Avantguard and her poseability as well as joints are great. I like this doll a lot and I have thought seriously of purchasing one but I like Sybarites more than Avantguards :)

Baby dolls and toddler dolls are very familiar to people here, as the tradition of fashion dolls has nothing to do with the Russian market - there were none in USSR. But there always were kid dolls, either Russian or German. So, baby dolls and reborns are really successful here because of that, especially among 40+ women, while their kids prefer BJD and fashion dolls.

Thanks Katie, very good points! Have you seen the new Avantguard knee joints? That is a good example of a more realistic joint, at least when standing at least!

It is concerning to hear that 'dead babies' have crept into doll shows in Russia too! Is there no escaping them :o

Thank you for a great text! I'd love to comment some of the positions :)

1.  Joints and more joints - it's the latest trend in doll industry. A lot of my friends want more joints on their dolls. I feel kinda odd when they all gather and start discussing that as I'm pleased with both types of dolls - the ones with basic articulation and multijointed dolls as well. That makes no difference to me personally because I play with my dolls way too rarely and in my childhood I used to adore Barbies with their "wooden" bodies as they say here :)

2. As for me, I like the variety of molds that Tonner launches in his movie series. But I'd personally like him to do 2 things:

- No more "square jaws"! Those brutal facial features aren't eye pleasing even when the doll herself is beautiful.

- Kitty Collier! I love that line and would love to see it back on the market.

4. Yesssss!!

5. I've seen your comment about reborns appearing on Dollexpo in Paris, am I right? I was planning my visit there but now I'm not sure I'd really like that. Here we suffer from reborns too. During an international show in my city, my friend (a Teddy-bear maker) and her friend (a designer of amazing felt creatures) always have to watch reborns for the 4 days that the show lasts because the reborners' booths are placed right in front of their own. This is their place for several years already and they were always surrounded by sweet dolls or teddies, and now they have to see people with "dead babies" which scare them, because reborns get more and more popular in my country. Poor things!

6. Yessss!! I am a girl with a short hairstyle myself and I am always glad to see short hair on dolls. :)

8. It was a surprise for me that there are no shops in England.  I can understand when people talk about such problems in Russia - but Europe? It's strange!
